 Updated Reagan birth time analysis notes:

-------------------------------------------------------

Part 1:

  In the past I had received a request from Dennis Frank to try use my "technique" to attempt to determine a possible birth time for Ronald Reagan. I used this opportunity to try to explicate my personal understanding on whatever astrology actually is.  I'm not sure that I am at all comfortable with my attempt at showing a Heidegger styled begging explication of the phenomena I routinely work at observing.

The letter to Dennis, with a few mechanical corrections and some addition wording here and there (in brackets):

Hi Dennis,

Dennis Frank wrote:

Incidentally, did you ever try your technique on Ronald Reagan?  I'd be
interested to know what ascendant you got.  If you are reliably accurate
when you do this stuff, that would be where you could play a unique role in
the astrological community.  I mean providing spec charts for famous people
that have no recorded birth time.  So-called rectifications have always been
promoted, particularly in the USA, but never seem anything other than a
blind guess.  If your efforts produced reliably, the resulting spec charts
would come across more convincingly to others, right?  Just a thought..

  I guess I often fail to let people in on my basic ontological "right-brained" premise...:)  Art is the animating and pattern producing energy component of Sciences "stuff"...:) I suppose that's my really bad definition of God...:)

Hunting Ronald Reagan: an introduction to Horoscopic Expressionism as perceptual analytic procedure, (er, sumpin like dat..:)

   I googled for any sketch, drawing doodle....no search  returns. As far as know, he did draw anything for me to "map", so we have to use Self projecting metaphors, smilies....mind's eye picture imagery...verbal mimesis from off the cuff remarks (and hopefully no meddling ghosts of speech writers are inextricably embedded..:) There is probably lots of quoted text available, I'm sure.      [note: I have since found a drawing, this is addressed in Part 3 below]

  I'll walk through my assessment process with you, perhaps observe myself in the process. I'm intentionally avoiding looking an any proposed Reagan charts this morning, to avoid installing some kind of bias.

  I'll start by checking for a date on Rodden's list:
http://www.astrodatabank.com/Nms_r.htm
I see, Feb 11, 1906, (and the location simply isn't critical at this point)
Noon chart starting point:
Fig.1)  http://pedantus.free.fr/Reagan_R_exp_01.gif

Metaphor Specimen Sampling Process:
How and why?:
 Now we look at the Noon protochart as assumed to contain radical pattern planets/aspect complexes in this case, i.e., innate potential for Self expression of one , R. Reagan. Self in this case means instinctive attractions to linguistic objects as as building blocks, *parts* potentially build-able metaphors. Only this alchemical art of bonding words as ontic objects together so as to construct imaginal phrases which have the communicative power to signal the presence of an individual in the act of expressing itself into the ontological being. "Its" presence into the world of possible of others as potential observers of the isolated Self.

What? :
 We snip some specimens of 'generic'  ontic material like this:
 First choose an aspect with potential.  Oppositions, if present, are often the most projective due to their dialectical nature, polarized and polarizing.
My sampling of "keyword" ontic Jungian tokens.
  Moon = "white"  plus Jupiter=Big

[To be clear, the next step here is to search for quoted material with possible chart resonance.]

Applying social conventions of linguistic structure:
  Possible solution for locating a partial quotation = "big, white"

Google [Reagan quote big white]
Search return = http://pedantus.free.fr/Google_SearchReturn_01.gif
Return #6 show "big,white"  (note they are just placed side by side...they are complementary, mutually defining NOT *opposing terms*....conventional wisdom of "astrologers" really is not useful at this point.

Examine the contextual "ontological" situation of the ontic building blocks.  In other words, *how does the life energy of Reagan use/employ these nearly dead parts of "meaning" to start to create a (verbal or written) linguistic Self-portrait.

Observe the individual's contextual frame as it is the Identifying Self structure.  Use the formal writing conventional observation that the paragraph is the smallest unit of individuated communicable "meaning", i.e., the intentional goal of meaning as performed by a given Self
from page: http://www.presidentreagan.info/speeches/gala.cfm

  So then, we read, all the while maintaining the essential context:

   ======================================================
"[..]I must say that returning to Washington today really brought back memories. As our plane headed toward the airport, I looked down on the White House, and it was just like the good old days...the South Lawn, the Rose Garden...David Gergen. I looked over a couple of blocks, and there was the Internal Revenue Service—bigger than I ever remembered it.  Up on Capital Hill, I saw that big, white dome, bulging with new tax revenues. I instinctively reached for my veto pen and thought to myself, "Go ahead, make my day." You may have seen President Clinton draw his own veto pen on television just last week. The difference is that his pen doesn't have any ink in it! Unless, of course, you're talking about red ink. And we all know the Democrats have plenty of that! [..]"
   =====================================================

  A good speaker, Reagan emphatic figurative language doing his bidding, building seminal phrases, painting the strokes of a verbal Self portrait.

Now Examine the text (paragraph above) as if it too were as "astrological" [in essence] as any chart. Art is art; the two forms [ language and chart aspect] share the identical psychical source code, they come into observable existence together, if one is sufficiently human and culturally enabled.
 Stay away from relying on any so-called symbolism, common sense symbolism,...their meaning are dead...just monuments to someone else's meaningful existence.. individuating *live* symbols do not come from any socially canned stereotypic reference. If so the person is never formed as an individuated being.

Observe ontic materials being made ontological...each person breaths Life into dead words and thus brings then existence...in "its" own image...:) So we have a "big, white," "dome" which is a personalized symbolism within the context of the paragraph, as the sampled unit of Self definition.

Is the now ontological token image "radical"? Does the attempted personal symbol have natal chart resonance? That is to say, what other natal planets in aspect could be cited as conjoined element-like components of the molecular-seeming, individually signifying Self token --"big, white" + "dome".
  Let us choose the Sun as it is the focus of a natal t-square.

Trial Confirmation of chart as Identity map:
  I think we have a a good partial confirmation of the native's birth date chart patterning. This because at this point we can finally play "astrologer" ..:)  We can look for the astrologer-only associations which give more holistic depth of personal meaning by means of keyword analysis, and the usual chart "reading" techniques.
  The contextual study, ensues. "I saw that big, white dome, bulging with new tax revenues"  If we take his intended message as real, then ewe must see Reagans observations as chosen images with Self-similarity, Apparently the psyche chooses on a very simple basis, i.e., a symbolic image is either "like me" or "unlike me".

Using Zodiacal to move with the Self from collective unconscious to Individually specific consciousness:
This is where Sun in Aquarius does ring of a collective-based reference for the idea of "Societal being".  Jupiter in Scorpio the idea of regenerative societal assets, "bulging" public coffers, he means. This is a fairly clear instance of Horoscopic Expressionism. Natal Moon opposite Jupiter finds a voice..:) And it is an oppositional tone. We "hear" the t-square as if a three planet musical chord being sounded...it is a little dissonant. So, "a" recognizable Life energy has now entered into observable existence. The ontic parts of symbols now have ontological meaning and purpose... Reagan's "meaning"....his ability to be observed as individually "present" and capable of communicating *his* meaning. The chart thus substantiates and enhances the signaling power of the words in context, and his empowered "Words" now substantiate and amplify the communication potential of the natal chart.

We can at least tentatively conclude with a poets glow of certainty that we can now better believe the proposition which simply states; Ronald Reagan = *his* Words and his Chart. The two arts show the unity of mimetic parallelism.
===============================

  You can see how it is *much easier* to *do* this procedure than than to explain it, what with all its cumbersome philosophically engender methodology.....LOL

We have established the collective unconscious basis for Reagan and his chart as comparable, viable, Self-patterning....mimesis--good artistic parallelism do seem to exist.

To "delineate" the probable House basis for symbols of Individuality, we might now look at the quoted text for truly Individual emphasis--all that which emphatic and demonstrable *but* tends *not* to support the tradition associations of Zodiacal Signs!

Quote specimen for para graph:

  "[..]I instinctively reached for my veto pen and thought to myself, "Go ahead, make my day." You may have seen President Clinton draw his own veto pen on television just last week. The difference is that his pen doesn't have any ink in it[..]!

Integration; Planets in Aspect form Signs Houses:

  So, Now we go into planet/aspect--house-position, visualization mode mode...:) But you certainly may leave you left-brain engaged.

  Ink = Saturn... qualities; authoritative, black, and in this case prone to limitation ans self-undoing. Sounds Like House 12

  Being that Mercury and Uranus lend easily to the idea of chaotic/ erratic, presidential, pen..

I would start the visual House based confirmation suggests working at the process of confirming or substantially altering this second protochart;

http://pedantus.free.fr/Reagan_R_exp_02.gif

  I does look like a promising start, but a lot more "evidence" should be examined before even thinking about a conclusive birth time guess.

Well, there you have it, Dennis, preliminary biographical astro-semiological analysis [which offers some clue as to an unknown birth time]....:) LOL

Rog...:)

Part 2:

 A search for more 'evidence':

  This next reference was quickly found by googling , " [ Reagan made drawings]"

  The third link listed on the page of search returns was the first entry which seem to be relevant.

   This find is an unexpectedly relevant mental image, an anecdote which gives us an uncanny recurrence or the pen-out-of-ink motif from Part 1 (above), this time Reagan is the one 'out of ink' but out of red ink to be exact. Gergen here uses his much retold anecdote to fashion for us his perception of Reagan. An expert journalist with long association with Presidents and leaders, shows us his 'snap shot' portrait of what is, for Gergen, the essential Ronald Reagan, the man, and the leader:

Reagan Anecdotes

“[..]

In April 1982, Reagan decided to deliver a prime time speech to the country in support of the economic programs he was sending to Congress. My role was to help with the choreography.

While the speechwriters were preparing a draft, I suggested to him that he use an easel and charts, drawing a thick red line to show what would happen to the federal deficits if Congress did not enact his budget (little did we know what would happen if they did . ). He agreed. We set the speech for 9:00 p.m. Eastern.

Even an experienced speaker, I thought, would need some prep time. After all, he would have to be reading from a TelePrompTer while sitting at his desk in the Oval Office, and then, on cue, stand up, walk over to the easel, and draw his red line, still reading from the prompter. "Mr. President," I said, "would you mind coming over about fifteen minutes early so that we can practice that part of the speech?" "No, I'll be there."

The rehearsal went flawlessly, Reagan reading the lines, walking over to the easel, drawing the line with a red felt tip pen, returning to his desk without a hitch. We were set - or so I thought.

As the speech opened, Reagan sailed along until he got up and went over to the easel. With horror, we realized we had made a mistake: after the rehearsal, we had forgotten to put the cap back on the red felt tip pen. Under the hot klieg lights of television, it had gone bone dry.

"Our original cuts totaled $101 billion. They (pause) I can't make a big enough mark to show you," the President said, drawing the pen across the chart.

"Screeeccch!" That was all that could be heard or seen. No line. An awful silence.

I was standing on the other side of the Oval Office, just behind the cameras . mentally updating my resume.

Fortunately, our television producer, Mark Goode, had more foresight than I did. He had brought a second red pen with him, and as soon as he saw what was happening, he hit the floor and started crawling across the Oval Office. The Secret Service had conniptions, not knowing what to think about this man crawling toward the President. Reagan just looked puzzled.

Mark, dear Mark, made his way around the back of the desk to the Old Man's feet. He held up the second pen. A twinkle came into Reagan's eye. Reaching off camera and without missing a beat, he told his audience, "Now my pen is working." Magically, the line appeared. The night was saved!

I have long imagined that if Nixon had been giving that speech, he would have thrown us out the garden window, called off the speech, and had bombers flying over Hanoi the next morning.

I have told that story so many times, embroidering on a detail here and there, that I can no longer swear that's exactly what happened. That's certainly what I remember and, sadly, I can no longer check it with Mark because he died in 1998. But it captures Reagan. He was The Natural - a man always sat ease before a camera. That was one of the assets that made him an effective speaker.
